Who says that just because our economy is taking a beating, we have to let our hobby interests take a backseat? Since when are the only educational hobbies available to us pretentious and expensive? I'm happy to report that you don't have to sacrifice that grand time with your kids. No, all you have to do is load up the kids in the family vehicle and take a drive out of town!

The farther out of town you drive, the lights of the city begin to dim. On a clear night, on a dark road, stop the car and look up into the stars.

For the most fun stargazing, be sure to take these along:

*Binoculars, 10x50 are the best, but any will do nicely
*Blanket to throw on the ground
*Thermos of hot cocoa, and styrofoam cups
*Knit caps, gloves, scarves, and jackets. Anything you need to stay warm.
*Printout of the constellations you'd like to see.
*Flashlight

There's nothing like it, and you may even have an old telescope in the attic that you've forgotten about. Bring it, too!

Now, what did that cost you but your time and energy? You just started a tradition that will keep your family close, and you may just have inspired an astronomer in the group.
